Giving up the car for Lent

Karl Cardinal Lehmann, head of the Roman-Catholic Church in Germany

The head of the Catholic church in Germany, Karl Cardinal Lehmann, Bishop of Mainz, called on his compatriots to give up their beloved cars for Lent to make a personal contribution to preventing climate change.

Cardinal Karl Lehmann said in Bild newspaper that the period of 40 days before Easter in the Christian calendar "requires us to rethink our lifestyle."

The Bishop continues: "Far too often, we do things that are harmful to our fellow citizens and the environment. Let us use Lent to make a personal contribution to improving our climate by having car 'fast.' Preserving creation is a duty which falls to all of us," Lehmann, the chairman of the German bishops'conference, said.

25 Million Germans are members of the Catholic Church. If they listen to Lehmann this might be a starter. In times of ecumenism maybe some of the 26 Million Lutherans in the country will follow their Catholic neighbors and give up their car, too.

Well Alex, so far you're all correct from the German point of
view. Not only is Angela Merkel Germany's first female
chancellor, but was she furthermore Germany's first female
secretary in charge of environmental issues in the 90s. This fact
gives Germans the certainty that she is well aware of matters and
needs discussed in the Club of Pioneers. I am quite sure that Mrs
Merkel will in future emphanise clean energy lot more than her
predecessor Mr Schroeder did although he was in a political
coalition with the German Green party.

I can only support the Cardinal and his opinions. The period of
40 days before Easter in the Christian calendar requires us to
rethink our lifestyle, not only considering our private needs but
especially in environmental topics. Let us all - independant of
our confession - follow this good example and start in our own
neighbourhood!

@bobby05: Mrs Merkel says a lot of things to clima changes what
our government has to do, but the government also built a lot of
new coal power stations and passed lightedly over thefurtherance
on bio agriculture f.e. It is not only important what you say it
is important what you do. I must remember that the german
government under leadership of Mrs.Merkel protected the german
car industry for the EU Comission in the point of the oblige of
production ecological cars. As i saw this blog, i say yeah i
have something for this lent I drive no car ... but seriously we
must ahead that in greater cities f.e. Dortmund, Berlin or Munich
we can resign of car using and go by bicycle, bus, tube or simply
feed.
